Mandatory Maverick Meerkat post.

Now that you have installed Meerkat, (make sure you set up swap memory to twice the size of your RAM) you need to reduce the swappiness of your system.
Swappiness is a measure of how easily your OS tends to push active processes to the swap memory (which obviously is slower than RAM). The default swappiness being 60 is very high. So you need to change it to somewhere in the ballpark of 10-30. The lower the swappiness, the more is the tendency of your linux OS to use the faster RAM rather than the slower swap and hence a more faster computer.

How to change your swappiness?

Check your current swappiness: (enter this in your terminal) cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

It should usually throw out 60.

Now do this in the terminal: sudo gedit /etc/systl.conf

It will open a configuration file. Check for the line vm.swappiness=60.

If there is no such line, just type in (without quotes) “vm.swappiness=10” and save it.

Restart your computer and should be significantly faster.

The other things you can install are:

Ubuntu Tweak: Download the .deb file from here
And install it.
Go ahead and install skype, google-chrome, vlc etc from within Ubuntu tweak. It also lets you customize keyboard shortcuts in ubuntu.
Nautilus elementary: This is a low-weight and better file browser than nautilus. It has coverflow like the Itunes and what’s more it has in-built terminal!
Press F7 for terminal within a folder and F4 for changing to coverflow mode.
How to install Nautilus-elementary:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
nautilus -q
Bingo! (Do NOT enter this)
And this link explains how to activate the ever-favorite breadcrumbs appearance.
And then go to omgubuntu.com and check out their latest things to do with Ubuntu 10.10 and try them out as well.
RSS aware: Get it from here.
A word of caution: It is a memory intensive program!
Get an Ubuntu One (remember it is two words!) account and sync your contacts and bookmarks.
Install Guayadeque (by far the best music player in Ubuntu).
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dtl131/mediahacks
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install guayadeque
Alltray:
And now get Alltray to minimize any program and make the program run from a tray icon. I use this especially for Evolution because it doesn’t background by default! It sounds silly though not to have that function for an email client.
Just type sudo apt-get install alltray and get it installed.
And then import all your contacts from gmail and export them to Evolution and sync with your Ubuntu One account!
Get LibreOffice from here
Purge all OpenOffice: sudo apt-get remove -purge openoffice*.*
Extract the downloaded libreoffice file and cd into the en-US folder.
Now sudo dpkg -i ./DEBS/*.deb
Then, sudo dpkg -i ./DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.3-debian-menus_3.3-9526_all.deb
Ailurus: This is another package like Ubuntu Tweak but works at a much deeper level. It helps you change even the swap configuration!
sudo dpkg -i ailurus_10.01-0revision1_all.deb
Have fun but be careful. With great power comes great responsibility!
PS. One of the best conky config files ever! Here!
Conky is a light-weight system monitor and a lot cooler than any other system monitor!
